Cabo Verde, which was elected in 2021 to join the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) for the period 2022-2026, assumed its role as a member of the CSW for the said period in 2022. This year, in 2024, it takes on a prominent position for the first time by joining the commission's leadership as vice-president, alongside Argentina, Latvia, and the Netherlands, under the presidency of the Philippines.

The CSW plays a crucial role in promoting women's rights, documenting their realities around the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and women's empowerment.

The first Commission on the Status of Women met in 1947, just two years after the founding of the United Nations, when a group of 15 women representing governments from around the world gathered in New York to begin laying the international legal foundations for gender equality.

These pioneering women leaders undertook projects to raise global awareness of women's issues and change discriminatory legislation.

It is worth noting that the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women is taking place from March 11 to 22 in New York, under the priority theme "Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, addressing poverty, and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective."

Cabo Verde is represented by the Minister of Family, Inclusion, and Social Development, Fernando Elísio Freire.
